Seven years ago, Pop and I began UnoEth.

When he brought me home a stunning leather messenger bag after visiting family Ethiopia, I started wearing it on my commute to work. I received countless compliments and questions about where I got the bag and was bummed to have to tell everyone it couldn’t be bought. I told Pops, and that’s when he suggested we start our own brand. Thus, the beginning of UnoEth. Seven years later, we’ve come a long way with our brand. This year, we want to prioritize sharing more about us and our story with you. What better way to kick it off than sharing with you some of Pops’ faves from our Ethiopian culture!

The Gabi BLANKET

The Gabi is an Ethiopian staple with deep cultural significance and many uses from clothing, to tablecloths, to throw blankets, and more. It is typically white with bands of color woven in. The Gabi is handmade with local cotton, and a handloom machine technique known as Shemena. All these aspects make for a beautiful and meaningful blanket that is hard not to fall in love with. No wonder it’s one of Pops’ favorites!

DORO WAT

Doro Wat is a popular and DELICIOUS Ethiopian dish. It is a chicken and egg stew that is flavored with Berbere spice. While it can be time consuming to make, it is a great meal for special occasions or those days when you feel like putting in the extra effort. Berbere is a tangy and hot spice that is mainly paprika with ginger, garlic, chili pepper, fenugreek and other spices.
